It is intended for defense of ships and important stationary objects against high-precision weapons (antiship missiles and aerial bombs), aircrafts and helicopters within the super short distance range and at the ultra low altitudes as well as for hitting the small-sized seaborne targets.
Kashtan CIWS major components include as follows:
- command module intended for target acquisition, issuing the target distribution scheme and output of target designation data for the fire modules;
- fire module (1 to 6) intended for automatic target designation reception, automatic target tracking, generation of required data and firing both missiles and guns to hit the targets;
- storage and reloading system intended for storage of 32 missiles in launch containers, their hoisting to fire module and descending to the ammunition under-deck compartment
Modular design makes the Kashtan CIWS adaptable to various types of ships from missile boats (of more than 500 tons displacement) to aircraft carriers. High combat stability of fire module is obtained due to integrated control system with use of radar and TV-optical guidance channels for simultaneous tracking of targets and the own missile.
The fire module features innovative incorporation of missile and gun armament:
- air defense two-stage solid propellant missiles with rod-fragmentation warhead and proximity fuse;
- two 30-mm six-barrel automatic guns.
